A rare opportunity to hear three highly celebrated and decorated African-American poets in one event. Lamont Steptoe is the recipient of the 2006 $50,000 PEW Fellowship, a Vietnam Veteran, and poet of the Black Arts Movement. Marilyn Nelson, former Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut is the author of numerous volumes of poetry which have garnered her an enviable list of literary awards as well as several books for children. She is the founder and Executive Director of Soul Mountain Retreat, a writer's retreat for poets from underrepresented racial and cultural backgrounds. Kate Rushin is former Director of the Center for African American Studies at Wesleyan University and currently teaches at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. She is the author of The Black Backups and The Bridge Poem. Please join us in welcoming these wonderful poets to our community.

Celebrate Hygienic Poets 2008 with an Open Mic and Poetry Slam. Poets can warm up the mic at the open session from 7:00 to 8:30. Cash prizes for Slam winners (1st: $100;
2nd $50; 3rd $25). An entertaining even for everyone!!
